Summer Learning Journey

In Room 1 we were looking at things that we could do over the holidays, this is a digital colouring book.

This is the original

and this is my version of it,
This painting is called Woman reading a letter, by Johannes Vermeer in 1663.
In a quiet, private moment, a young woman stands, engrossed in reading a letter. It is morning, and she is still wearing her blue night robe. All the other colours are subordinate to its radiant lapis lazuli; yellow and red hardly make an appearance. Vermeer rendered the different effects of the cool light precisely. For example, he was the first artist to try soft grey for flesh, and to paint the shadows on the wall light blue.

International Evening

On Tuesday night we had an international evening, this means each class throughout a couple weeks had to research 2 countries, make some traditional food and come up with a performance to share with the school all from those countries. Room one chose Italy and South Africa as our countries, we had about a week and a half to practice our performances and get ourselves ready. For Italy we did a traditional Italian dance and for South Africa we sang shosholoza, but we didn't finish there. We also did 2 Korean dances and our cultural elective performance. After we perfected our dances we tried out doing some traditional art and drawing our own Mona Lisa. The night quickly rolled around, we ate a lot of delicious food from all over the world and before I knew it we were up on stage with our last performance. This was really fun and I enjoyed seeing all of the effort being put into each performance!

I want to say a big thank you to all of the parents who made food and all of our teachers who put in a lot of time to help us with this!

For many Samoans, Christianity and Fa'a Samoa are interwoven. In 1899 after years of civil war, the islands of the Samoan archipelago were divided.

Helping the earth

WALT Building our knowledge on whats happening in the world and how to help.

Ocean, Air and land have been affected by pollution. Using lots of water affects the Ocean because we use so much water.  If we have less smoke and bad things in the air then the air can be cleaner! The land gets affected by everyone cutting down trees and littering. Ice in the Antarctic is also melting faster.

Animals are going extinct at an alarming rate because of deforestation, climate change and over hunting. Examples of animals that we could lose to things like this include Rhinos, Tigers, Orangutans, Elephants and so many more.

Coal, oil and gas are a big part of climate change. Coal, oil and gas are bad because they affect the air, land, animals and people. When excessive amounts of pollution goes into the water, land and air it can make natural resources dangerous to our animals and ourselves.

Poorer communities are affected more by climate change that richer communities,

We need to reduce water waste, recycle correctly and help each other in order to help ourselves.  If we reduce water then there can be more water in rivers & lakes etc. By recycling correctly we can have less waste.

Volcanoes

WALT see the reaction between baking soda and vinegar

In room one we have been doing science for about the past two weeks, we started by using multiple layers of paper mache to create the shape of our volcanoes. Next we painted them. Lastly we had the actual experiment, we filled our volcanoes 2/3 of the way with water to make sure we could see the reaction, then we added baking soda which a base and on top to make the reaction we added vinegar which is an acid when they mix they create a gas, the gas is carbon dioxide. Sadly it wasn't as cool as we hoped the eruption was small and we couldn't see it that well. Maybe the water diluted the vinegar? Next time I would add more baking soda. even though it didn't work, it was still fun.

Would you ever try this experiment?
